Apprentice Ironworker- Construction & Welding
Military service can put you on a direct path into the skilled trades. Ironworkers Local 25 is actively recruiting veterans, transitioning service members, National Guard members, and reservists in West Michigan through Helmets to Hardhats. Helmets to Hardhats applicants who meet Ironworkers Local 25's minimum apprenticeship qualifications may be eligible for direct entry into our Registered Apprenticeship Program, providing qualified military candidates with an expedited pathway into a rewarding union construction career. Train through our West Michigan Training Center in Hudsonville while earning wages and gaining hands-on experience on construction projects throughout Michigan. Eligible veterans may also use G.I. Bill® benefits while completing the apprenticeship.

Through our partnership with Helmets to Hardhats, qualified military applicants have an opportunity to transition directly from service into a career as a union ironworker.
Direct Entry Opportunity
Helmets to Hardhats applicants who meet Ironworkers Local 25's established minimum qualifications may be eligible for direct entry into the apprenticeship program.
This pathway is designed to help qualified:
- Veterans
- Transitioning active-duty service members
- National Guard members
- Reservists
move more efficiently from military service into a civilian skilled-trade career.
Applicants must still satisfy Ironworkers Local 25's established eligibility, documentation, testing, screening, and other apprenticeship requirements.
Earn While You Learn
Ironworkers Local 25 operates a paid Registered Apprenticeship Program. Apprentices earn wages on the job, while receiving classroom and hands-on training through our Hudsonville Training Center.
Eligible veterans may also qualify to use G.I. Bill® benefits during their apprenticeship.
Build West Michigan
Ironworker apprentices may work on projects throughout Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Ludington, Battle Creek, and many other communities across Michigan.
Work may include:
- Structural steel erection
- Reinforcing steel and rebar
- Welding and fabrication
- Rigging and machinery moving
- Bridges and infrastructure
- Industrial and manufacturing facilities
- Architectural and ornamental ironwork
- Conveyors and material-handling systems
Military Skills Translate

Requirements
No previous ironworking experience is required.
To qualify for the Helmets to Hardhats direct-entry opportunity, applicants must meet Ironworkers Local 25's minimum apprenticeship qualifications and successfully complete all required application, testing, documentation, drug screening, and eligibility requirements.
Applicants should also be prepared to:
- Perform physically demanding construction work
- Work safely at heights
- Work outdoors and in varying weather conditions
- Travel to jobsites throughout West Michigan as required
- Work effectively as part of a crew
- Maintain dependable transportation
- Demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and a strong commitment to safety
Applicants must complete ACT WorkKeys testing in Applied Mathematics, Graphic Literacy, and Talent Assessment as part of the current Local 25 application process. Testing can be completed at our training center upon submission of our application: APPLY HERE Local 25's current application instructions also identify the DD-214 as supporting documentation for applicants with military service.
